2. Air purification, research by NASA.

NASA has assembled a list of air purifying plants. This list is part of the NASA Clean Air Study which is a research into the quality of the air in space stations. All plants absorb carbon dioxide and different kinds of harmful substances, and they release oxygen. The plants that are on the NASA list, however, remove significant amounts of benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene as well. There are micro-organisms in the soil that also contribute to the purification of the surrounding air. 
For you this means that some of your plants might be busy removing harmful substances from the air in your home. Cigarette smoke, nasty smells from the kitchen, but also the little dust particles that are normally in the air. 3. Ecologically grown plants

The agricultural sector is actually the most innovative with regards to the saving of energy. We are developing greenhouses that deliver a surplus of energy back to the energy net.
These days enviromental requirements are becoming more and more strict. It is nowadays hardly possible to grow plants in ways that are not ecological. Many weedkillers that had been used throughout the decades have since long been prohibited. Oil prices force growers to replace their traditional greenhouses with modern ones with a better isolation so that they can keep their costs for warmth within reasonable boundaries. Smart climate computers regulate warmth and air and hereby optimise the natural day’s warmth and sun energy. 

There are many measures and developments within the agricultural sector that are meant to relieve our natural environment:

  • Residual warmth. Many growers make use of residual warmth from power stations and cooling water from other large industries. Traditionally residual warmth was returned to the environment unused and caused the temperature of the water in our natural rivers and seas to increase. Now this source of energy is put to use in greenhouses, where it can sustain even the most tropical of climates.
  • Plants use carbon dioxide from the air for growing and flowering. It functions as a fertiliser. Plants store it in their leaves, stems and roots. CO2 is at the same time a waste product in many industries. These days we recycle CO2 in our greenhouses. We have it transported towards our horticultural areas through pipelines and we release it into our plants’  environment where it is either absorbed and stored or exchanged for oxygen.
  • Prevention. More and more chemical weed or insect killers are being prohibited by the EU. Many growers have searched for alternatives. We try to prevent diseases from invading our plant population. That way we will not be necessitated to cure anything. We use disinfecting mats and netting for our ventilation windows, for example, against insect invasion.
  • Biological weed or insect killers. We put more and more biological weapons into use for the prevention and the treatment of plant diseases, such as ichneumon flies or scorpion wasps that destroy other insects. This relieves the environment of chemical damage.
