Chrysant must be one of the best-known plants around. Just like the Orchid family it is a large family, consisting of about 25.000 different species.
In 500 B.C. this flower was already grown in China. After it had been brought to Japan, it was discovered by adventurers and brought to Europe. Originally this plant blooms when the days are short. Partly because of this the white species are very popular for All Saints, mostly in Germany and France.
In the twentieth century it was grown in a pot for the first time.
Ever since this blooming potted plant has claimed its rightful place indoors, thanks to the many colourful varieties that have been developed by growers. Chrysanthemum fits any modern living room and any occasion.
Nowadays these plants do not need the days to be short in order to bloom. You can find them in your flower shop throughout the year and they can be purchased for every occasion. The yellow ones are good for Eastern, the whites for All Saints, the reds for Christmas and any other colour for the times in between.
When night frost has gone you can bring them out to the balcony or garden. Indoors they will do fine as well!
Put several of them in a big bowl on a side table or on the dinner table. Outside on the garden table in a big pot they add a colourful touch to your terrace! |
